New York–based photographer Sue Kwon has spent decades capturing the evolution of hip-hop and its culture. Originally from Connecticut and trained at NYU, Kwon moved to Lower Manhattan in the late 1980s, where she began documenting the city’s burgeoning hip-hop scene—including artists like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan, and pioneering female MCs such as Roxanne Shanté and Salt-N-Pepa. Her work, published in outlets like The Village Voice and The Source, goes beyond music, chronicling a cultural movement coming of age.
