FUTURA chose the twin-turbo Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 as the centerpiece for this collaboration, reflecting his deep connection to Japan — a pivotal influence on his career and personal friendships. The project transformed a classic Hot Wheels die-cast car into a miniature canvas, incorporating signature FUTURA motifs, including the “Perpetual Motion” atom, and a custom “DOSMIL” license plate, a nod to his moniker and legacy. The challenge was translating FUTURA’s iconic abstract graffiti style into a collectible format that retained authenticity and cultural resonance within both automotive and street art communities.

Execution

The collaboration launched digitally and through merchandise drops, supported by media content, without a physical activation. The limited edition Hot Wheels cars featured FUTURA’s signature livery, transforming the die-cast vehicle into a miniature canvas that embodied his distinctive artistic style. Complementing the merchandise, a short film produced by 13thWitness (@13thwitness) documented the transformation process, capturing the kinetic energy and craftsmanship of FUTURA’s design. Digital storytelling highlighted FUTURA’s history, influences, and signature motifs, contextualizing the art-toy crossover and connecting fans to the artist’s broader body of work.

Cultural Impact

The collaboration transformed a small die-cast car into a tangible piece of kinetic art, celebrating FUTURA’s legacy as a pioneer who introduced abstraction to a historically letter-based graffiti movement. The car’s design drew inspiration from his expressionistic piece “Moment, Magnitude, Scale”, creating a direct line between his larger artistic work and this collectible. By merging street culture, nostalgia, and design, the project connected diverse audiences — from longtime collectors to automotive enthusiasts and fans of contemporary art — and introduced FUTURA’s vision to a new generation. The campaign resonated culturally by bridging the gap between childhood play and professional artistry, emphasizing creativity, legacy, and personal storytelling.

The collaboration was a commercial and cultural success, with all 12,000 units selling out in under 24 hours,  demonstrating strong demand and collector engagement. Media coverage was robust across automotive, art, and street culture outlets, including Complex, Yahoo, StupidDope, Autoevolution, and Hagerty, amplifying awareness and cementing the campaign’s significance in both art and collector communities. Beyond sales, the campaign generated excitement online and offline, sparking conversations about the intersection of street art, design, and toy culture while celebrating FUTURA’s enduring influence on contemporary visual culture.
