We are delighted to share Felipe Pantone’s solo exhibition “Manipulable” at Gallery COMMON — co-curated by ICNCLST. On view on June 3, through July 17, 2022, the show featured 8 new spectacular kinetic works within a completely interactive installation space, and marked the artist’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan since 2014.
Drawing inspiration from kinetic artists like Victor Vasarely and Carlos Cruz-Diez, Pantone’s works revolve around themes of dynamism, transformation, and digital revolution. The current exhibition takes these philosophies and puts them directly into practice. All of the artworks in “Manipulable” (a word which has roots in the Latin manus (hand) and refers to “something that can be moved or operated using the hands; something that can be managed, controlled, or molded”) were created to be touched and rearranged by the viewer.
“Light, motion, and color define everything I do, and adding the element of touch brings everyone closer to the work. For the first time, all of my works for an exhibition have been made to be configured by the viewer. I believe it’s very contemporary that an audience can interact with what they’re consuming, and I wanted to create artworks that can respond to today’s world of self-curation.” Pantone says. As opportunities for in-person exchanges have increased, Pantone explores the ways that touch and physical interactivity can bridge the gap between artist and audience.
